The Ghana Beach Soccer Association will today vote new executives for the association.

Saturday 13th October was a turning point in the fledgling life of Beach Soccer in Ghana.

And Wednesday 17th October is to be another historic day.

At the Association’s congress held on Saturday, 13th October, Beach Soccer clubs cast a vote of no confidence in the former Executive Board.

A new batch of executives is to be elected on Wednesday and the Interim Management Committee representative, Nii Laaye Bonne, has been speaking about preparations for the fresh elections.

“We had nominations opened on Monday to Tuesday up to 5:00pm. As at yesterday, we had only one person picking up forms for the President slot, two people picked up forms for the Vice-President slot, two people for the Organiser position, and one person for the Treasurer slot.” he said.

Speaking on Wednesday morning, Nii Laaye gave us an insight into events slated for the day.

“Currently, vetting is going on at the Accra Sports Stadium. Right after the vetting, we will go into Congress and then the elections will be held.

“Adequate preparations have been made, we have reps from the National Sports Authority, from the Electoral Commission who are to help us, the security services are also there to make everything smooth, free and fair.” he concluded.

Two representatives from each of the 20 registered Beach Soccer Clubs and one from the Referee Board will be taking part in the vote. To win a position, one must have half of the votes plus one.

Beach Soccer clubs vote to dissolve GBSA Executive Board

At the Association’s congress held on Saturday, 13th October, it was to be a turning point in the fledgling life of Ghana Beach Soccer in Ghana.

In a bid to improve the performance of Ghana Beach Soccer Association executives, the clubs under the association cast a vote of no confidence in the current Executive Board. The now ‘Old Executive Board’ has been dissolved.

A new batch of executives is to be elected on Wednesday, 17th October as they seek to improve on the work already done by the old board.

The Interim Management Committee has released a statement (below) to this effect, signed by Nii Laaye Bonne, the committee’s spokesman.

Beach Soccer Clubs force dissolution of executive board.

Congress of the Ghana Beach Soccer Association has voted to dissolve the current executive board after a heated delegates’ congress at the media centre of the Accra Sports Stadium.

15 out of the 17 delegates present passed a vote of no confidence in the current administration thus calling for the fresh elections which have been slated for Wednesday the 17thof October, 2012.

In a solid show of support for the man who brought organised beach soccer to Ghana, 15 delegates, voted for the board’s dissolution with the exception of the President Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah.

However in another twist, the GBSA boss rather used his veto power to cancel that motion which would have exempted him from the vote of no-confidence.

Instead, he insisted on a fresh slate for all executive committee members across board in order to weed out some non-functioning officials.

”I think it is important that we all stand up for accountability and I totally support the clubs call for fresh elections’’.

Meanwhile, Ampofo Ankrah fiercely counted what seemed to be an orchestrated attempt by two members of the GBSA to unseat him.

He said he was not fazed by accusations of ”non-accountability” and his ”one man show” levelled against him.

‘’I have nothing to hide but a solid track record as GBSA President, I would also want my stewardship to be put to the test”

His remarks followed a confrontation between the association’s Treasurer Cecil McFrancis and the PRO Seraphim Amanortey Amanor when the two disagreed on figures with the association’s accounts while the former was reading the statement to delegates.

An interim management committee has been set up headed by Patrick Johnson of the National Sports Authority, Bernard Brock of Osu Dolphins Club, Theophilus Armah of Teshie United and Referee Paul Aggrey of the Beach Soccer Referees Association.

According to Mr Armah, nomination forms would be available at the GBSA office from Monday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

He added that all potential candidates would be vetted by the IMC after a registration fee of GH100 has been paid.

Signed

Nii Laaye Bonne

GBSA IMC Spokesman

Ghanaian players round up: Result ‘Waris’ ‘Gyan-ts’

Our Ghanaian contingent who ply their trade abroad were again in action over the weekend before FIFA’s international break for national team assignments.

From the title, you can tell those I will pick as the best of the lot. Abdul Majeed Waris and Asamoah Gyan both got hat tricks for their teams and also they both top their respective league’s top scorers’ charts.

But Gignac also grabbed his brace immediately after and both sides held on for the 2-2 draw. Jordan Ayew was a 74th minute substitute for Marseille. The draw still leaves Marseille at the top of the table with 19 points.

Kevin-Prince Boateng featured in the Milan derby, playing the full 90 minutes, but a 4th minute Walter Samuel goal proved the killer as Inter Milan held out to get the 1-0 win over AC Milan. Joseph Alfred Duncan was on the bench but did not feature for Inter Milan.

Juventus on-loan striker to Sassuolo, Richmond Boakye-Yiadom, bagged two goals to steer his team to a 2-1 away win over Grosseto.

Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu did not play over the weekend for Udinese, after picking up another injury, which has also cost him a place in the Ghana Black Stars team called up for the Malawi game.

Isaac Cofie was also an unused substitute in Chievo’s 2-1 home win over Sampdoria.

Afriyie Acquah was also an unused substitute in Parma 0-2 away loss to Catania.

HOLLAND

In the Dutch Eredevisie, Matthew Amoah was an unused sub in Heerenven’s 3-3 away draw with SBV Vitesse.

Bukom Banku’s fight postponed to November 24

Braimah Kamoko aka Bukom Banku

– Braimah Kamoko aka Bukom Banku

Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as ‘Bukom Banku’, was billed to defend his WBO Africa light heavyweight title against Pascal Ndomba of Tanzania. But that has hit snag as the fight has been postponed.

The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) will hold a convention in Florida, USA between O0ctober 22 to 28. And as Braimah holds the organisation’s title, he cannot fight within the time.

Golden Mike, who happen to be the boxer’s promoters, have had to reschedule the fight to November 24, since there are four other WBO sanctioned bouts on the bill.

Bukom Banku, who is known in Ghana more for his public pronouncements and interesting character outside the ring, has seen an amazingly rapid growth of his career under the award-winning promotional outfit, Golden Mike Promotions.

But that may just be scuppered again as he has again been recently mentioned in an assault of a family in James town Accra. This ‘indiscipline’ has threatened to break his relationship with is promoters in the past.  And with recent happenings, we cannot tell how his future is with the outfit.

AllSports reached Braimah Kamoko on phone but he declined to grant an interview or talk on any of the issues.

Golden Mike Promotions have seen that Braimah has fought some credible opponents, one of the recent ones being against Uruguay’s Jorge Rodriguez Olivera.

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) recently named Braimah Kamoko as the 2011 Best Boxer.

As things stand, Bukom Banku will seek to improve his fight record of 23 undefeated fights and 18 knockouts when he faces off against Pascal Ndomba of Tanzania on November 24.

The fight was surprisingly easy – Sena Agbeko

– Sena Agbeko, in blue trunks and Eric Kwadey, in yellow trunks

Sena Agbeko took his fight record to 12 wins in 12 fights, all by knockouts and he says that the fight was an easy one for him.

The match was originally supposed to be between Sena Agbeko and Ayitey Powers for the National Middleweight Championship. And as AllSports reported to you, Ayitey Powers did not show up for the weigh-in, effectively forfeiting the match.

Organizers had to scramble around for an eleventh hour replacement in Eric Kwadey.

And after Sena beat Kwadey in Round 3 of the contest with 2 minutes 37 seconds on the clock, he says it wasn’t much of a challenge.

“It was surprisingly easy for me, seeing as I came into this fight with an injured rib. I was supposed to fight Ayitey Powers and I injured myself in sparring, but these are not the kinds of things you bring up prior a fight. I expected it to be more difficult for me,” Sena said, speaking with AllSports.

“My breathing was a bit difficult. I got caught with a punch straight to the rib when I went in and it wasn’t too bad. So I figured I could take it through.”

He said that even though he was concerned that he hadn’t fought in 8 months, he still felt he could win it.

“I was partly concerned because when you haven’t been in the ring [for] so long and you haven’t got used to the crowd being there, the chants and everything, sometimes you come and then everything awes you for a second.

“But I’ve been sparring for the past eight months that I have been out of the ring. So I knew I was going to be a bit comfortable. But you know there is always the crowd factor, the noise, but everything went well and I still got my KO.”

He told AllSports about his plans for the future.

“I have one major fight lined up for November. It’s yet to be concluded but I can say that yes, I have a fight coming up in November.

“Probably, I’m going to fight for a major belt on that bill. And after that, I want to look beyond the shores of Ghana.

“So far none of the best in the Middleweight or the Super-Middleweight division want to fight me. If they don’t want to fight me, I will look beyond Ghana.

“I’ll leave the door open for anyone who wants to fight me, November 23rd, and we’ll see.” he said.

The 22-year old Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) student thanked his fans for coming out in their numbers.

“The turnout is good. I get a lot of support from the crowd and I’m really appreciative of that. You know, it helps a lot when you go in the ring and you know that there are people out there who look out for you, who support what you do.

“They came all out and they really did help me today.

“I’m sure if Ayitey Powers was here, it would have been more rapturous. But it’s been good.” he concluded.

Ghana has tremendous talent – WBF Pres. Howard Goldberg

Mr. Howard Goldberg (left) with Mr. Samir Captan

– Mr. Howard Goldberg (left) with Mr. Samir Captan

After witnessing the fight night dubbed ‘Night of No Fear’ on Saturday 29th September at the Lebanon House in Accra, the President of the World Boxing Federation (WBF), Mr. Howard Goldberg, has admitted that Ghana abounds with boxing talent.

“I have always known that there is tremendous talent in Ghana. But unfortunately, a lot of fighters don’t get opportunities,” he said.

“As the President of the World Boxing Federation, it’s my aim to give all the fighters on our continent a fair opportunity to fight for big titles.

“South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, we need to take back our rightful place as some of the best boxing countries in the world.

“As you know, the WBF is a very fast growing organisation. The latest boxing magazines say that we are the fastest growing. We’re big in America, we’re big in Mexico, in Europe, and I want Ghana to join the growing popularity.” he said.

The South African was also impressed with the organisation of the event.

“Congratulations to Samir [Captan] and Ghana. It’s fantastic. It’s a lovely atmosphere. The fights have gone well, the officials have done well.

“We want to create opportunities not only for the boxers but also for the administrators and boxing officials. So that’s what I’m going to do as the president of the WBF.”

Mr. Howard Goldberg was mainly in Ghana because of the third bout, which was a WBF Superbantam Lightweight championship fight between Joshua Barnor (Sonia Gym) and Alfred Quaye (Saga Gym). Mr. Goldberg presented the WBF Africa title belt in the ring before the fight and he supervised the whole match.

Joshua Barnor won the fight by TKO in the 4th round. He believes that even though Joshua has a long way to go, he has the potential to be at the top.

“I would like the Ghanaian fighters to not only fight in Ghana but internationally as well. Mexico, America, South Africa…that would give them the opportunity to get to a bigger stage.

“And also bring world titles to Ghana. Joshua Barnor is a promising fighter. He’s got a long way to go but if he works hard, four, five, six fights’ time, anything is possible.” he concluded.

The event, which was promoted by S.O.A.Q. Empire Gloves Promotions under the tutelage of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), proved to be very exciting and fans told AllSports that their expectations were met.

Ayitey Powers’ withdrawal did not mar the night – Mohammed Amin Lamptey

Hon. Mohammed Amin Lamptey, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Boxing Authority

– Hon. Mohammed Amin Lamptey, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Boxing Authority

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Boxing Authority, Hon. Mohammed Amin Lamptey has said that he is very pleased with the ‘Night of No Fear’ boxing night.

The fight night dubbed ‘Night of No Fear’, promoted by S.O.A.Q. Empire Gloves Promotions under the tutelage of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), was staged successfully at the Lebanon House in Accra.

Six (6) bouts were fought on the night but the build up to the event took a turn when some boxers failed to turn up for the weigh-in. Noticeable among the names is Ayitey powers, who was billed to fight the much younger Sena Agbeko. Many feared that with the withdrawals, the expectation of the event would be low. But the Authority’s PRO did not think so.

“It has never put a dent on the event. Remember a couple of days ago, Ayitey Powers came out and called the bluff of Braimah Kamoko (Bukom Banku). So many thought that he was going to use Sena Agbeko as a stepping stone to tell Braimah Kamoko that he is ready for him,” he said

“But unfortunately, he chickened out for no reason.

“So for me, I was very sad when I heard it. Because on Friday, at the weigh-in, we expected him to come, he didn’t show up, to my surprise. I thought that he would probably turn up late, he didn’t come.

“So I’m very happy Sena Agbeko, after waiting for 8 months and getting rusty, took the chance to fight against Eric Kwadey, who was a replacement at the 11th hour. So for me, I think that it’s good for Sena Agbeko.

“As for Ayitey Powers, it’s only God who knows why he is not here. I think that we will leave it for the boxer to think through and maybe later he will come out and tell all of us why he was not here today.”

He however said that Powers can be penalized.

“What the GBA can now is to get in touch with the Promoters and the Match-maker. They would be in the good position to explain to us why the boxer chickened out.

“The GBA is dealing directly with the Promoters because they are the ones who brought the pairings to the GBA before it was approved.

“If we question them, and they are able to convince the GBA, then they are all right. But if they can’t do that, then the GBA would have to make sure that certain things are explained. The GBA would also invite the said boxer and if he fails to explain very well, there’s a possibility of he being sanctioned.” he concluded.

He also said that the attendance recorded on the day was better and well organized than some other bigger fight nights.

“For me, I think that the turnout is very good because we have several fights that you cannot even compare to tonight’s turnout.

“If you look at the seating arrangement of the place, there is some kind of decency, some comportment here.

“You may even have a full house but the indiscipline would definitely dent the image of the sport.

“You can see here today we have our friends, the white people are here, and people from all walks of life are here to watch the fight. This is what we want.

“Sometimes it’s not about the number. It’s about the decency that will showcase the real picture of boxing that will help to market the sport. That is more of what we are looking for.

“That being said, the turnout today is massive.” he concluded.

The media should help Ghana boxing – Samir Captan

Samir Captan, President of Ghana Boxing Authority

– Samir Captan, President of Ghana Boxing Authority

The president of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Mr. Samir Captan has made a passionate appeal to companies and corporate bodies and more importantly, the media.

He made this appeal when AllSports spoke to him on Saturday 29th September. This was at the boxing event dubbed ‘Night of No Fear’, which was successfully staged at the Lebanon House in Accra.

The event, which was promoted by S.O.A.Q. Empire Gloves Promotions under the tutelage of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), was well patronized and was a very exciting one. Many fans who spoke with this reporter agreed and said that it did live up to its billing.

Mr. Samir Captan said he was pleased with the whole event and with spectator turnout as well.

When we asked him what it is that was posing a challenge to the progress of boxing in Ghana, he summarised it all in the form of an appeal.

“I have an appeal, and that is to sponsors and corporate bodies. The present promoters find it hard because they don’t get sponsors,” he said.

“We have to some of the blame, we the boxing fraternity. The insults towards the stakeholders, when we come to fight the indiscipline behaviour which we try to stop, it doesn’t auger well for boxing.

“Companies who want to sponsor such events, when they hear these things, when they read newspapers, they get turned off; unlike in football where you don’t hear all sorts of things like these. Who will want to give money to promote fights?

“That’s why during my administration, I have put in measures to try and stop these things, for respect to come to boxers.

“If the media doesn’t come to cover such events, nobody reads or hears about boxing. When they read bad things about boxing, it draws people away. So I’m appealing to the media to also give good account.

“The print and electronic media should help us to raise the standard of boxing. Project it.

“When we read the papers, we don’t hear much about boxing here. All we read about is Mayweather, Pacquiao, big pictures, long articles of these people.

“Write long articles about Ghanaian boxers and that will help us move forward. So that is my plea.” he concluded.

A number of dignitaries graced the event. Among them was the President of the World Boxing Federation (WBF) Africa, Mr. Howard Goldberg. Also, the head of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF), Ambassador Ray Quarcoo was present. They all had good things to say about the event.

You will recall that Ambassador Ray Quarcoo’s outfit, the GABF, also held a boxing night in memory of the late President J. E. A Mills on Friday 21st September, 2012. AllSports brought you a comprehensive report on the events of the night.
